Recommended Books

While not a complete compilation of every military-related book out there, I have found these guides helpful and think others will feel the same when they check them out. Books can be purchased at bookstores or online. They are organized in alphabetical format by title and below each is a description of the book in my words and what I found most helpful about it.

  • Separated by Duty, United in Love: A Guide to Long-Distance Relationships for Military Couples by Shellie Vandevoore
This is a great relationship book that can answer many questions you might have on how to deal with the distance, whether it's a base in another state or a deployment to another country. Great book I'll be using again and again!
  • Married to the Military: A Survival Guide for Military Wives, Girlfriends, and Women in Uniform by Meredith Leyva
Don't let the title fool you; this book is geared towards girlfriends too! Also a great resource for women interested in joining the armed forces. Having a resource like this for women in uniform is really great! There is also a section of what you should wear at various events such as military balls. This is probably the best resource for question you have that your man can't answer!

  • A Civilian's Guide to the U.S. Military: A comprehensive reference to the customs, language and structure of the Armed Forces by Barbara and Richard Shading
The title says it all, really. Broken down into sections based on each area of the armed forces - Army, Navy, Air Force - this book is wonderful for figuring out the bureaucracy of the military. A great guide for anyone who has ever wondered what the acronyms stood for and how rank factors into most aspects of military life.
